Unicorn is a dynamic wholefood retailer with a difference. We operate a 10,000sq.ft. site close to the centre of Chorlton, retailing dried foodstuffs, fresh organic produce and other groceries direct to the public, with an annual turnover of over £7 million. We also pack and process foods on site, including an expanding ‘ready-to-go’ range of salads, soups and baked goods. We are proud to serve a hugely diverse customer base, largely from Chorlton and its surrounding areas (e.g. Old Trafford, Stretford, Hulme & Moss Side).
While we work to provide decent, affordable food for our local community, our business has gained a national reputation – we’re one of three finalists for Best Retailer at this year’s BBC Food & Farming Awards, having previously won the award in 2008 (as well as The Observer Food Monthly’s Best Retailer the same year).
As a worker co-operative, Unicorn is owned and managed by its workforce of members. Co-op membership involves working at all levels of the business, and includes significant amounts of shop floor work (serving, cleaning, re-stocking) as well as taking on specialist responsibilities such as storeroom, finance or human resources. Unicorn operates with a flat management structure, and all co-op members are managers of the business, taking on equal responsibility for equal pay – there is no head office or shop manager, we’re all it! Our working days offer plenty of variety, with a mixture of customer-facing, back-office and business development tasks.
We are looking for highly motivated, hardworking individuals to join our team. Hours will involve early and late shifts with alternate weekend working. Applicants need to have an excellent eye for detail and the ability to work efficiently, completing tasks within a given timescale while delivering a superb standard of customer service. You will be expected to work well independently, as part of a group and under instruction. At Unicorn we will make use of your previous training and experience, and also challenge you to develop new skills.
There is a probationary period of 7 months from the start of employment, during which you will earn the co-op member rate of £11.50 per hour (£20,930 p.a. for 35 hrs) and receive a range of benefits including a 25% shop discount and 5% employer pension contribution. Additionally, co-operative members are eligible for healthcare, childcare benefits and profit-related bonuses.
Please read the Co-op Member background pack & application form on the right. Fill in the application and e-mail or post it back to us.
