4% Chikukwa Ecological Land Use Community Trust

The Chikukwa Ecological Land Use Community Trust (CELUCT) in Zimbabwe have been working for over 20 years to create sustainable, agro-ecological farming practices to tackle food insecurity. CELUCT works across the half dozen Chikukwa villages, which are located in the mountainous region in the east of the country close to the border with Mozambique and home to over 7000 people. Their success has been remarkable and they are now commended as a shining example of sustainable village-led community development. This success has been achieved through a combination of measures based on permaculture principles to tackle soil erosion and boost soil fertility, restore tree cover, create water management systems to conserve water, and through seed saving programmes to select varieties that do well in local conditions and promote crop diversity. Farmers come together for field days to assess the success of each other’s crops, and for seed fairs to exchange seed.

We are funding CELUCT to host a two-week training programme for representatives from other communities across Zimbabwe to learn from the Chikukwa villagers. They will offer training in sustainable farming and natural resource management practices in order to share practical ideas for food sovereignty.
