4% Soil for Life

Established in 2002, Soil for Life is a non-profit company that assists Township communities in the Western Cape in South Africa to overcome hunger and poverty through the establishment of food gardens.  They are currently working in 16 impoverished communities, all of which are characterised by high levels of poverty, food insecurity, gang activity and crime. 70 – 80% of the people Soil for Life work with are women.

Through the training and support provided, individuals are taught how to grow their own food using environmentally sound methods, equipped with knowledge regarding health and nutrition, and assisted to gain skills with which to generate income from their gardens. Participants start with a 12-week training programme covering soil preparation, natural fertilisers, re-cycling, seasonal planting, planning crops, organic pest control, harvesting and seed saving, conserving water, and using all available resources - including how to use the rubbish generated by their households in their gardens. They are supported over a four-year period by Soil for Life.

We are funding 16 places on the home gardening programme. Watch a great little video looking at the impact of their work here.
