1% Women's Environmental Network - 'Cultivating the Future' project

WEN are based in the inner city London borough of Tower Hamlets, where over 58 per cent of the population is from non-white British ethnic groups. Working with disadvantaged and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women the organisation provides practical support and advice on growing food and on composting, bringing together the issues of local food and waste prevention. One group supported in this way is the Coriander Club, where a Sylheti speaking support worker provides practical skills in horticulture. Free training in numeracy, literacy, English and healthy cooking are also offered.

WEN has also developed a national network of food growing groups and local food initiatives, and now supports a network of over 50 growing groups in cities such as London, Bradford, Birmingham, Portsmouth and Sheffield.
